St. Patrick's Day Shenenigans

The week leading up to St. Patrick's day, we had a lot of fun completing activities involving shamrocks, the color green, and getting ready for our annual WIPP St. Patrick's Day parade!

Pot of Gold math.  The students filled their pots of gold with gold coins indicated by a number on their pot.

We also talked about skip counting by 10's.  The students did a great job writing the numbers 10, 20, 30, etc. all the way to 100 on shamrocks.  After writing numbers, the students put the numbers in consecutive order to create a skip counting by 10's banner.  Everyone did a great job writing the numbers and counting by tens!

For morning work one day, the students used their imaginations to create with shamrocks, paper, glue, scissors, and crayons.  We ended up with festive works of art and a few Shamrock masks!

We also had fun making Irish flags and shamrock hats to display during our parade.

We also completed a fun experiment in which colored water traveled from one cup to another without being poured.   We speculated what color would be in the middle cup once the yellow and blue water mixed.  Lot's of friends thought green!  The students were amazed as they watched the colored water travel up the paper towel.  Finally, after about an hour we started to see the results of the color mixing.  Green! The color of the week!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by reading books of his and completing activities based on those books!  We read The Cat in the Hat, Wacky Wednesday, There's a Wocket in my Pocket, and One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish.  

The Cat in the Hat

We painted paper plates black and painted a hat with red stripes for our Cat in the Hat mask.  We also talked about rhyming words and the students completed a worksheet in which they had to match words that rhymed.  They students did a great job with this activity as they realized the last few letters of rhyming words were the same!

We also celebrated a birthday!

Wacky Wednesday

Our Wednesday last week was so wacky!  As the students came in that morning, they began noticing how wacky our classroom was.  Later in the day we counted how many wacky things in the classroom and counted nine! 

We're so wacky!  

Some friends missed Wacky Wednesday, but had no problem taking silly pictures when they came back to school :)

We also made a Thing 1 and Thing 2 craft with handprints and then wrote about what these creatures would do if they came to our houses.

There's a Wocket in my Pocket

The kids really enjoyed this story with all of the silly rhyming words.  After we read the story, we discussed words that rhyme with pocket.  I wrote the ending sound ocket on a piece of chart paper and the students took turns giving me different beginning sounds to form words that rhyme with pocket.  At one of our centers, the students drew a creature to place in their pocket and then chose a name for the creature that rhymed with pocket.  Then they used their fabulous writing skills to write the creature's name on their paper.

Our activities for this book included goldfish graphing, ice fishing for letters, and adding blue and red fish.
